Job Description:

The Ukrainian Cultural Centre is seeking an experienced and skilled Cook for our community. In this role, the cook is comfortable planning prep, set-up and providing quality service in all areas of food production including daily offer, special events and displays/presentations. Skills for this position must include competent knowledge of Ukrainian cuisine, including but not limited to making soups, cooking meats, cooking vegetables, pastas, cold salads etc. You must also be comfortable serving food, interacting with residents and guests, and working as part of a collaborative team deliver an exceptional culinary experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • General: Manage food preparations as per monthly schedule and ensure food safety when preparing, cooking, selling, serving, and storing foods. Follow the established procedures and recipes for the Ukrainian food cooking.
  • Cleanliness. Ensure the kitchen cleanliness at all times, cooperate with the office administrator on arrangement for the janitorial services.
  • Calendar and rentals. Update and follow calendars of the kitchen use. Discuss and advise on kitchen rental requests from third parties.
  • Events. Support coordination of the UCC events and suppers that involve kitchen use and serving food. Ensure timely preparations for the suppers and events.
  • Frozen food stock. Ensure sufficient stock of frozen food for daily operation; organize, store and handle frozen foods ir accordance with health and safety regulations.
  • Volunteers. Coordinate and train volunteers to assist with frozen foods preparation, Ukrainian suppers, and other food preparation related projects.
    • Create a friendly and welcoming environment for volunteers to work.
    • Instruct volunteers on the established processes to ensure operation safety and regularly update management on safety improvement areas.
    • Control the equipment proper use and its appropriate functioning.
  • Inventory & Supplies. Maintain inventory and records of food, supplies, and equipment, provide timely updates regarding the required supplies.
  • Cooks and catering. Cooperate with other cooks and/or catering companies as and when required.
  • Reporting. Report to the Director of Kitchen and Catering, ensure effective communication and collaboration with staff and Board members.
  • Other. Perform other cook duties as assigned and assist with other tasks as needed, including administrative tasks, event planning, and volunteer coordination.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience of cooking and preparing foods, including Ukrainian cuisine.
  • Knowledge of English and Ukrainian languages.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with the Board of directors, staff, volunteers, and external partners.
  • Having a valid Food Safe certificate or being willing to obtain it.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb and to stand for extended periods of time.
  • A valid driver license is an asset.
