“Kalyna” Ukrainian Choir

“Kalyna” Ukrainian Choir embodies the spirit of the Ukrainian Canadian community in Victoria, BC, uniting individuals who share a passion for music, singing, and the rich tapestry of Ukrainian culture.

As an affiliate organization of the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Centre in Victoria, B.C., Kalyna Choir was established in 1985 under the leadership of Geraldine Shostak, who conducted the choir for many years. After a hiatus, the Kalyna Choir was reconstituted in November 2018, with all new members and under the masterful direction of Lina Streltsov.

Named after the vibrant red berry of the Viburnum opulus plant, “Kalyna” is more than just a name; it is a centuries-old symbol of Ukraine, embodying resilience, beauty, and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people.

Each year, Kalyna Ukrainian Choir performs at concerts and festivals thereby celebrating ancient Ukrainian traditions, melodies, and harmonies – the legacy of their ancestors. Kalyna Choir is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Ukrainian culture, sharing its beauty and vibrancy with the local community.
