The Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island is a registered non-profit organization founded in 1978, dedicated to the promotion and celebration of Ukrainian Canadian culture through a variety of enriching initiatives. From traditional arts workshops to cultural events, we provide opportunities for individuals to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of Ukrainian heritage.

We also actively work to strengthen bonds and amplify collective efforts among Ukrainian Canadian organizations and communities on Vancouver Island. Through effective communication and collaboration, we aim to create a supportive network that enhances the cultural experience for all.

In the heart of Victoria, on Vancouver Island, a small group of enthusiasts gathered regularly to learn the vibrant art of Ukrainian dancing. What began as a modest endeavor blossomed into the Veselka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, captivating audiences with their energetic performances across various venues in the city and its surroundings.

As the dance group’s popularity surged, it revealed a hidden truth: there were more individuals of Ukrainian heritage in Victoria than previously thought. Inspired by the colorful dances and lively performances, interest in Ukrainian culture flourished among both Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike. Veselka Dance Ensemble found itself at the center of this cultural awakening, becoming a beacon for those seeking to explore and celebrate Ukrainian traditions.

Realizing the need for a permanent space to nurture and showcase Ukrainian cultural activities, a dedicated committee emerged. What started as a simple inquiry into acquiring a property soon evolved into a full-fledged organization with a clear vision and purpose. With determination and enthusiasm, the committee embarked on a journey to recruit members, raise funds, and establish a cultural hub for the community.

Their efforts bore fruit as interest in the initiative spread throughout Vancouver Island. Meetings were held in towns and cities across the island, drawing support from all corners. Through tireless fundraising endeavors, the dream of acquiring a dedicated facility began to take shape.

In the spring of 1978, the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island was officially registered, marking a significant milestone in the community’s journey. Soon after, a property at 3277 Douglas Street captured their attention. Despite its dilapidated interior, the building offered a sturdy foundation and a prime location.

With determination and hard work, the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society transformed the space into a vibrant hub for Ukrainian cultural activities. Today, the Ukrainian Cultural Centre stands proudly as a hub for numerous organizations, housing esteemed groups such as Veselka Dancers, Ukrainian Studies Society, Help Ukraine Vancouver Island Society, Ridna Shkola, and a Ukrainian library.

Throughout the year, the Centre buzzes with activity, hosting different Ukrainian cultural and informational events such as Easter Traditions, Malanka (Ukrainian New Year), Ukrainian Christmas Eve Traditions, Ukrainian Supper and many more. These gatherings offer an immersive experience into Ukrainian culture, featuring workshops on traditional crafts, culinary delights, music, and more, inviting everyone to partake in the rich tapestry of Ukrainian heritage.

As we celebrate our vibrant cultural heritage within these walls, we do so with deep respect for the Indigenous peoples of this land. We acknowledge that the Centre resides on the unceded, traditional territory of the Lekwungen people, as well as the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, whose enduring connections to this land shape its history and present.
